About Online Programs @ KCKPL

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kansas City, Kansas Public Library had to close temporarily for the safety of staff and patrons. To still maintain a connection with the community and serve our patrons, we’ve created this blog to host online programming.  You can find out full event calendar here.

The Sanborn Fire Insurance maps are an invaluable tool when researching the history of your home. Created by the Sanborn Map Company in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the maps indicate the outlines of all buildings in a given city and show how cities changed over time as buildings were constructed or demolished. Pictured here is a detail of the Wyandott City map (now downtown KCK) from 1885, showing Minnesota Ave. between 4th and 5th Streets with a dense row of businesses on either side of the street. The Sanborn maps are available on microfilm at the Main Library, but many have been digitized and can also be found online.
