A deer rub describes the scars caused by a male deer rubbing his forehead and antlers against the base of a tree. Easy to spot in areas with high deer populations, hunters use them to find ideal locations for hunting. They appear in the late summer or early fall when male deer rub the velvet off their newly acquired antler growth or during rut season. The area between the forehead and antlers contains a large number of apocrine sweat glands and leaves a scent that communicates a challenge to other male deer while also attracting potential mates.

This snail was found during a mindfulness in nature exercise at the Mr. & Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library! We had the students be completely silent for two minutes while hiking, and they were to explore with only their eyes and ears. Being mindful can help you see things you wouldn’t usually see during a hike. This tiny snail was discovered during our two minutes of silence.

Each year, the evergreens around the Mr. & Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library gift our patrons with the greenery for a holiday wreath. Branch clippings, berries, or pinecones from Red Cedar, Holly, or other evergreen trees & shrubs can naturally decorate your windowsills, mantles, doors, or bookshelves during the holidays. And you’ll never need storage for natural decorations- nature materials sans glitter or extra bling can go out your door & back to nature. A big thank you to everyone who came and made wreaths with us this year!

It's the time of year to see who’s been naughty and nice. Turner Community Library is ready to mail your Santa Letters to the North Pole. Fill one out and drop it in our mailbox. We’ll call you later to pick up your reply from Santa. Santa Letters must be turned in by December 19 to get a reply.
