While sorting through some 19th-century books in the Kansas Room, we stumbled across this item: an unused ticket for the Southwest Missouri Electric Railway Co. The Electric Railway was a streetcar line originating in Joplin, Missouri, that expanded to serve the Tri-State mining area in Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma at the turn of the 20th century. The region had a population of 100,000, and the train cars ran on a half-hour schedule and were full nearly all hours of the day, particularly during the lead and zinc mines’ rush hours. Fares were approximately 1 ½ cents per mile. This ticket probably dates to around 1910. To learn about regional transportation history, visit the Kansas Room at the Main Library.⁠
