Martin Luther King Jr. was born January 15 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He grew up to be a Baptist minister and a civil rights activist. King dedicated his life to seeking both civil and social justice for the African American community. In the 1950s and 1960s King used peaceful protests as a means to spread his message. We celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. on the third Monday of January each year. It is a day to honor him for his vital role in the civil rights movement.
